Have an outdoor gym/adult playground built outside in a public park, with all-weather construction of the exercise machines. Equipment could include push-up, chin-up, dip, and sit-up stations. Also a rowing machine, seated chest press, seated leg press, stationary bikes, and other cardio equipment. See pictures for examples. These are popular in areas of Europe, China, and more and more are being installed in U.S. cities.
Potential location could be near the Trinity Trails by Panther Island Pavilion for use by downtown residents, students taking classes at the multiple campuses, those who work downtown, and those using the trails for running and cycling. This location could work well with the recent additions of the outdoor rinse station.
There are even companies developing outdoor gyms that convert the energy generated by users into electricity to power the lights at night with a display showing how much the users are generating.
Great potential for positively impacting the health of citizens with an increase in outdoor fitness options. It would not require a gym membership so any and all have access.
